SUBJECTS TAUGHT
CHEMICAL ADDICTION: Since the vast majority of those who end up in prison came from dysfunctional families where one or more of their parents were addicts, it is not surprising that approximately 95% of prisoners are alcoholics and/or drug addicts. That is why teaching on recovery from chemical addictions is our number one priority.
We use Ray Geisel’s workbook Walking the 12 Steps with Jesus Christ distributed by Christian 12 Step Ministries, Inc. P.O. Box 4321, Ocala, FL 33478. We have also developed our own curriculum using excerpts from the book Healing Life’s Hidden Addictions by Dr. Archibald D. Hart.
SEXUAL ADDICTION: Sexual addiction is not uncommon. Our two greatest drives that long to be satisfied are our desire for food and for sexual satisfaction. Sexual abuse within families has long been a problem although it has only come to the forefront in recent years. Those who have been abused often become the abusers setting up a cycle that goes on from generation to generation. Since the sexual freedom movement started in the 60’s and pornography flooded our society, sexual abuse of children has become a major problem. Those who were abused as children are the ones most likely to offend in this area. Most of those sent to prison for sexual crimes are those who abuse their own children. Contrary to popular belief they are not sexual predators or pedophiles. Actually only about 2% of sexual offenders are pedophiles. Since most pedophiles show no inclination to want to change, we do not minister to that group of sex offenders.
Sexual addiction is treatable! It does however require healing the total man (see our insights into Inner Healing). Our articles titled Our Sexuality and Free Indeed can be found on our web site under Dick’s Writings.
We use the teaching Sexual Addiction developed by Lew Gervais of Hope Ministries 2020 Palm Bay Road NE #1, Palm Bay, FL 32905 also the counseling material from June Hunt of Hope For The Heart, P.O. Box 7, Dallas, TX 75221 www.hopefortheheart.org.
BOUNDARIES: Our students are taught the need to recognize those things they will encounter in life that could become pitfalls for them to relapse into their addictions. They are taught to draw a line in the sand that says, “Don’t Go There.”
We use the Book and workbook Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend.
INNER HEALING: Many if not most of our students were abused as children. The physical and emotional abuse they received caused deep wounds that when not healed cause inappropriate behavioral problems. These problems manifest themselves in their relationships with their significant others, causing marital conflicts which often results in spousal abuse and abusing their children. These emotional wounds usually go undetected until one becomes introduced to some form of teaching on inner healing.
We use the workbook titled Inner Healing developed by Dunklin Memorial Camp 3342 SW Hosannah Lane, Okeechobee, FL 34974
ANGER MANAGEMENT: Anger causes pain. Prolonged pain must be medicated. For the correlation between pain and addiction read our article Pain & Addiction which can be found on our web site under Dick’s Writings.
We use the Anger Management Workbook from New Hope Anger Management, 3152 Rostan Lane, Lake Worth, FL 33461
CHRIST LIKENESS: Rev. John Glen’s Alpha Workbook and video series is an excellent tool for learning who we are in Christ. This brings freedom and growth to all who want to become mature Christians. Distributed by Alpha Ministries, 2500 S. Kanner Hwy. Suite3, Stuart, FL 34994
MANHOOD: In order to be a man who is loved and respected by ones wife and children, a man must learn God’s ways of living and relating to those in his immediate family as well as others in the community. James M. Young’s Manhood In His Image workbook and video series is an excellent tool. This is distributed by Time for Freedom, Inc., P.O. Box 819, Ocala, FL 34478
